Barefoot, in the midst of mango trees My gypsy girl dances with me The sapphire of her eyes consumes And pours me like purple tea She amuses herself with my unruly hair And on a bewildered flute plays the song of night She hurls me Captivates me And doggedly pursues me With the arrows of her wild eyes She captures me with her anklets She ensnares me As a wild, stray gazelle My gypsy lover Swims as a fish in the lake of my eyes And, like a bare Mermaid She squats on the palm of my hand My gypsy lover Is mad Primitive Calm And spontaneous She wraps herself with almond blossoms A rifle dances between her eyes My gypsy lover Binds me with a red kerchief Scatters me into another world And showers me with seagull feathers She takes me into the tent of her eyes My gypsy lover is a never-ending trance Her gypsy hair fascinated me The rhythm of her mountainous tambourine stirred me She occupied my body as a jinni Against her gentle refusal I held her hands She crushed me like crumbs of sugar And freed me from malign influences With her incantations of the grand star She placed me around her neck As an eternal necklace My gypsy lover Is a dark-skinned Arabian girl She mounts the wind as a female knight She permeates my soul With wild scents and rare perfumes My gypsy lover Has a water-pure character She has vanquished my kingdom And established herself a princess of my court She rules my palaces And tears down my castles She raves and rages against me, the king And lets loose her horses In the plains of my chest She roars and revolts Like a restive wild filly My gypsy lover Engraves me as a tattoo On her cheeks And paints me as kohl in her eyes She imprisons me as an expression of affection in her lips My beloved Gypsy lover Is my most precious possession
